I have mentioned before how much I adore Domestic Sluttery- please come back and grace our internets with your amazing blog! I would save up my reading and then about once a month read all of the posts that I had missed, passing on or bookmarking or buying anything that I had seen. I remember seeing Sian's post about The Shooter's Sandwich and being so in love with the idea that I not only bookmarked it, but passed it straight on to my husband (then boyfriend) telling him that I had found a sandwich that we had to make because it was so incredible. Hubby doesn't like sandwiches so he was skeptical at first, but he soon saw the merits to this wonderful invention from Tim Hayward.
This is good stuff indeed! But it takes a large amount of effort and is prepared the day before- and that wait to eat it is just MEAN!
It is important to get everything as dry as possible for the next part: constructing the sandwich! | Take one large loaf, slice the top off and remove all of the bread from the insides. I used mine to dip into oil and balsamic vinegar that evening, to stop me feeling so miserable that I couldn't eat my sandwich yet! Also, fry a load of flavourful mushrooms and onions and steaks. Use good quality steaks for this as you will be able to tell the difference! |
Place (squish, squash and squeeze) the steaks in the bottom of the loaf. Add a layer of onions and mushrooms, mixed with some blue cheese for extra flavour. Then add a layer of spinach before adding another layer of mushrooms, onions and cheese. I added some sun dried tomatoes (because everything is better with tomatoes!) and then a final layer of steaks.
Then you need to put the lid back on the loaf, wrap it in brown paper and pile under a great weight to leave overnight. Then your very squashed sandwich is ready for cutting and serving!
Does that not look like the greatest sandwich known to man? I certainly think so. This is lovely as a lunch with crisps and salad, or taken on a road trip/ picnic. I also quite enjoy it in front of the telly =). The trick is to have your ingredients as dry as possible to stop it going soggy and then it is a hand held snack!
Variations!
I love making variations of food that I love. I figure that I like it one way, lets see how many different ways I can enjoy it!
We went to a food fair and came back with some gorgeous foods- and some exotic meat burgers (from Kezie). So we thought, how will these work in the sandwich? |
The result? They kind of crumbled, I think due to using burgers rather than steaks, and were too small really to have a good portion of all of the different flavours. So- why am I telling you about the disaster? Because they tasted GOOD. And to encourage you to have a go and change it up a bit. Remember- the better quality the ingredients, the better the flavours! |
