I'm not going to lie, I'm not a huge fan of home cooked toad in the hole. In fact, I actually prefer ready made, Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire Puddings to home made ones (and have you ever seen plate puds where you serve the food in the pudding- to DIE for) but please don't judge me for that. Regardless, when I saw Lakeland's twitter post linking to this recipe for Toad in the Hole, I just had to try it. So I decided to cook it for my husband (who isn't a huge fan of toad in the hole), my mum (who hates sausages) and my dad (who really likes toad in the hole and sausages in general).
I did contemplate using bacon or chorizo instead but my dad doesn't like those in dishes and as he was the only person who didn't have the potential to hate the dish, I thought better of it. If you try it, think about using one of those and let me know! Once the onions are softened slightly and the sausages and starting to be cooked (kind of brown all over- but not yet done all the way through), take the food off the heat. Heat oil in a casserole dish in the oven before putting the sausages and friends and batter into the dish.
And then into the oven it goes to become all lovely and brown. I think that the dish that I used was too deep and not wide enough, so mine didn't come out as pretty as Lakeland's did but then I'm not really known for pretty looking food- just tasty food. And then serve! I served with peas and instant gravy and it was gorgeous! I got thumbs up from all- including (I am pleased to say) from my mum who said it was the best toad in the hole she had ever had and she would happily eat it again- result! |
